Dear Everett, we need you.
Who Proposed This Initiative?
Backers of the initiative are Olympia-based activists and attorneys seeking to capitalize on Everett’s low threshold for measures to qualify for the ballot. They want Everett’s voters to give them the momentum so they can profit from taking it statewide.
What Do They Want?
Backers of the initiative want the watershed returned to a ‘natural state’ before man-made homes, roads, bridges, and businesses. To achieve this, they want to sue Everett residents and businesses, attacking property rights and stopping everything.
What‘s The Purpose?
This does not create a single new environmental standard or protection! The sole purpose is to give environmental activists and their lawyers a quicker path to file frequent, frivolous lawsuits in the name of protecting nature. This is called “enforcement” in the proposal.
How Would They Use It?
Expect activists and their attorneys to file endless lawsuits aimed at stopping waterfront redevelopment at the Port of Everett, curtailing the creation of affordable housing, and restricting access to local fishing and boating.
Wouldn’t They Need Proof?
No! The initiative proposes to establish a burden of proof that does not require scientific evidence to prove something actually causes damage. Essentially they would be able to make up allegations that have no factual basis.
Can Everett Afford This?
Absolutely Not! This initiative encourages frivolous litigation, impacting jobs and recreation, and further bogging down our overwhelmed justice system. If this initiative passes, it’s the Attorneys, not the environment, who will see the benefits.
